U.S. tax filing from abroad doesn’t have to be complicated

If you live outside the United States, U.S. tax rules do not stop applying to you. Many people are surprised to learn that U.S. citizens and green card holders generally have to file a U.S. tax return every year, no matter where in the world they live or work. Foreign business owners with U.S. income have filing obligations too.

That said, filing from abroad does not have to be complicated. Here is what it actually involves.

Who needs to file

Two groups most often need to think about this:

U.S. citizens and green card holders living outside the country. Your filing requirement follows your citizenship or residency status, not your physical location.

Non-U.S. residents with U.S.-source income. This includes foreign-owned businesses, non-resident property owners, and international clients with U.S. investments or business activity.

The foreign income question

If you earn income abroad, you may be able to exclude some or all of it from U.S. tax through the foreign earned income exclusion, or claim a credit for taxes already paid to another country. Which option works best depends on your specific situation — your income level, the country you live in, and how that country taxes you.

You may also have separate reporting requirements for foreign bank accounts and financial assets. These are reporting forms, not automatically an extra tax bill, but missing them can carry real penalties. We will cover this in more detail in an upcoming post.

Why this trips people up

Two things usually cause the most confusion: multiple tax systems interacting with each other, and deadlines that differ from the ones people are used to. If you live abroad, you generally get an automatic extension to file, though any tax owed is still due by the regular deadline. It is easy to miss this distinction and end up with penalties that were entirely avoidable.

Working with a CPA who understands this

None of this is a reason to guess your way through your return or avoid filing altogether. A CPA who regularly works with clients living outside the country can walk through your specific situation, tell you exactly what applies to you, and handle the filing correctly the first time.

Jessie Dong CPA, LLC works with individuals and business owners across the world, entirely online. Wherever you are, the process is the same: a conversation to understand your situation, secure document sharing, and a return that is prepared, reviewed, and explained clearly before anything is filed.
